Walk to School Event 17 May 2022

Holmes Chapel Partnership and Holmes Chapel Parish Council would like to invite local residents to take part in our ‘Defeat Danger’ Walk to School event on Tuesday 17 May 2022.

This is the second year we have run this event in conjunction with Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking.  https://www.livingstreets.org.uk/products-and-services/projects/walk-to-school-week.  We are using the walk to raise awareness of the ongoing dangers pedestrians face when walking around Holmes Chapel.  One positive outcome following last year’s event has been the provision of a new pathway to assist those coming to and from the Cottons Estate.  As suggested by the Safe Walking Routes to School working group set up by the Partnership and the Parish Council, Cheshire East Highways has now made an official way through the hedge from the Toucan crossing on Middlewich Road. This means that youngsters making their way to school can now get straight onto the quieter roads of the Lakes estate and don’t have to walk along the narrow pavement bordering Middlewich Road with its heavy traffic heading out to the motorway.

Our walk last year was extremely well attended by local school children, teachers, residents, councillors, and the local media.  This year we have invited Cheshire’s Police & Crime Commissioner to join the walk as we remain frustrated with the lack of response and support we have had from Cheshire East. Read our open letter to the PCC here.

The Walk to School Week theme on 17 May is ‘Defeat Danger’ which is why we are choosing to walk on Tuesday. We would like to ask village children participating to dress in Jubilee colours (red, white and blue) to tie in with the village decorations which will have gone up the weekend preceding the walk.

Families from Brooklands Estate will meet at the entrance to that estate at 8.20am, cross over Marsh Lane/Station Road, follow Manor Lane to Macclesfield Road where they will pick up families from Saltersford Gardens around 8.30 walking west up Macclesfield Road to the 'Safe Crossing Needed' location, where we will have 'Road Attendants' to assist the crossing, where children for the Hermitage will leave the ‘crocodile’.   Children going to Middlewich Road will then proceed to Mandeville's turning left at the passage to Church View, cross at the pedestrian crossing in the village centre, then use Church Walk, Bessancourt and onward along Middlewich Road to the Primary School.

Families from the Cottons Estate will meet at 8.20am on Cotton Field Road adjacent to the pedestrian crossing, cross Middlewich Road using the crossing and new path through to Lingmell Gardens, Coniston Drive, Grasmere Drive and then cross Chester Road at the 'Safe Crossing Needed' location, where we will have 'Road Attendants' to assist the crossing. Once across Chester Road, Brookfield Drive and then Middlewich Road.
